Which are the goals of the association of the German Friends of LSE?
The German friends of LSE aim to keep the contact between the alumni of the London School of Economics, the LSE and the German students at LSE alive by regular lectures, academic and cultural events. They also promote the live long learning and networking.
Dear friends, dear co alumnae and co alumni,
in the first half year of 2009 I want to make a statement. Where does the German association stand? What has been achieved?
The association acquired a bronze bust create by the Berliner artist Bertrand Freiesleben of the former LSE director Lord Ralf Dahrendorf (1974-1984) (Foto). The purchase was exclusively financed by special donations of our members and nonmembers. The Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation for freedom also contributed with a substantial donation. Lord Ralf Dahrendorf was for a long time president of this foundation.
The bust was presented to Lord Dahrendorf at a special reception of the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation in the British Embassy Berlin on May 5th, 2009, on his 80th birthday. He was delighted. The bust is excellent and much better thas the following Foto. During this reception F.D.P.-president Guido Westerwelle held the Laudatio on Lord Dahrendorf. The artist and myself also honored Lord Dahrendorf in our speeches. Ten donators and a representative of LSE participated.
The bust is to be put up in the LSE Atrium Hall (this atrium hall exists only for a few years) between the Old Theatre and the Student Service (Foto) . The bust will be handed over to LSE at the bi-annual LSE Alumni Leader Forum on September 25th, 2009.
The Alumni leader forum is the „legislative body“ of the LSE Alumni Association. It was founded for years ago on the iniative of the former LSE Governor David Kingsley. The main purpose is to support the Alumni activities all over the world. To say it clearly: the german association is not funded by the LSE in London, but by the member fees and member support ( e.g. free room for meetings and free lecturers). For special purposes, e.g. the predeparture parties together with the German Society at LSE for new LSE students, special funds are granted from London. We also depend strongly on the free commitment of the LSE alumni.
We enjoyed „graduate recruitment fair“ in March 2009 in Berlin organised for their students by LSE together with Imperial College in London and the University of Cambridge. The evening before a podium discussion on „Opportunities after LSE and Oxford“ was organised by our Berlin coordinator Thomas Kaiser-Stockmann. Former LSE- und Oxford students presented their careers. We intend to organise more events on career perspectives for our young alumni.
We are happy that Julia Lettinger und Inga Kröger are now active regional coordinators for the Munich regions.
We plan the next annual member meeting von Oct. 10 and 11, 2009 in Weimar. The preparations started.
I looking forward to good cooperation, many good talks and personal contacts and the astonishing commitment for the assocation, especially at the annual meeting in Weimar.
