About the event
Dear Alumni, dear Friends,
We are pleased to invite you to a private guided tour in English of the exhibition “Monet on the Normandy Coast. The Discovery of Étretat” at the Städel Museum.
The exhibition examines how the striking coastal landscape of Étretat in Normandy became a central source of inspiration for modern painting. It focuses on Claude Monet’s repeated engagement with the area’s cliffs and natural rock formations, highlighting how variations in light, weather, and atmosphere influenced his work.
In addition, the exhibition places Monet within a broader artistic context, featuring works by Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, Camille Corot, Eugène Boudin, and Henri Matisse. Through paintings, drawings, photographs, and historical materials, it illustrates how Étretat developed from a small fishing village into an important artistic site in the 19th century. The presentation emphasizes themes such as serial painting, perceptual experimentation, and artistic exchange, underscoring Étretat’s lasting impact on Impressionism and modern art.
